Well, I am technicaly employed for now! I started a job about four weeks ago as an instructor at an after school program. The school where I am based was also able to find me some additional work as an aide in the classrooms for a few hours during the day. I mostly work with 5th graders, which is a dramatic change from my preschool experience. 5th graders just don’t respond the same to “Johnny, it’s not nice to hit Bobby… Now say your sorry”. It has been a good learning experience so far.
It has proved to be a learning experience in many other ways too. My first day of work, I arrived at an introductory meeting and to my surprise found that I was the ONLY caucasain girl in the room! The school I work at is about 75% Mexican. Even the caucasian children speak with a Spanish accent. I find myself frequently thinking, “Is it just me, or are they speaking something other than English?”. Something else I have found is that the Mexican children (and adults too) have difficulty saying my last name. I usually have to repeat it several times before they can understand what I am saying, although this goes both ways sometimes.
